Guide to reach out to your state legislators

Step 1– Go to the site for the TN General Assembly at this address.

Step 2 – Type your address into the “Find my Legislator” form. (No need to put your full address, just street name and city or zip code.)

Step 3 – Locate the emails of your legislators (see image below) and write them a brief email (content in next step.)

Step 5 – Write a brief email with three parts:

Part 1 – Tell who you are and explain where you live and what you do. If you own a firearm, let them know.

For example:

“My name is ____ and I am a school teacher from Cookeville and a mother of two…”
or
“My name is ____ and I am a local businessman from Jackson. I served in the Navy and I am a gun owner…”

Part 2 – Explain in your own words that as one of their constituents, you are writing to express your support for:

  • Temporary Transfer Laws that would allow authorities to temporarily restrict access to firearms from people who pose a risk to themselves or others
  • Stronger firearm storage laws that require firearm owners to provide secure storage and report lost or stolen weapons
  • Consistent background check requirements across more firearm transactions
to help keep firearms away from dangerous people who are not legally allowed to own them

Part 3 – Include your exact address with your signature, and invite them to reach back out to you if they have any questions.
